Local Exhaust Ventilation Testing
Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is a system that provides extract ventilation to prevent persons in the workplace from inhaling substances that are hazardous to their health.
LEV systems include some of the following examples:
- Benchs with Built-in Dust and Fume Extraction
- Local Exhaust Ventilation Extraction Booths
- Paint Spray Booth
- Self Supporting Arm
- Vehicle Exhaust Extraction
Legal Duty
Broadland Group Limited will undertake a performance assessment of the extraction system including:
Face and capture velocitites - Is the system capable of capturing the substance?
Transport velocities - Is the system able to entrain the substance in the air stream?
Static pressures - these are taken throughout the system to identify blockages and to make an assessment of the loading of the filter. Local Exhaust Ventilation
There is a statutory requirement within COSHH Regulations 2002 (as amended) for your LEV system to be tested at least once in every 14 months depending on the type of substance controlled.
Regulation 7: requires that the exposure of employees to substances hazardous to health be either prevented or, where that is not reasonably practical, adequately controlled. This would include local exhaust ventilation.
Regulation 8: There is a duty on the employee to use LEV provided and to report any defects observed.
Regulation 9: requires that any control measure taken to comply with Regulation 7 must be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair. This also specifies that records shall be kept of the results of the tests including details of any repairs carried out as a result of the examinations and tests. These records have to be kept for a minimum of 5 years.
